BUCHAREST - Belize's honorary consul to Romania has been bitten by a rabid cat, who subsequently died of the disease, doctors said Wednesday.

Ioan Curtean Hondol, a diplomat of Romanian origin who represents the central American country here, was bitten and scratched last week in the small village near Bucharest where he lives.

Tests showed that the animal was suffering from the disease, but it is possible that the consul was not infected since he took anti-rabies medicine immediately after being bitten, doctors said.
