Six
escaped circus lions cause panic in Brazil
August 7, 2000 SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Six lions escaped from a circus and caused panic in a Brazilian town early Monday but injured only a horse before they were shot dead, police said. The lions broke out of their circus cages before sunrise and prowled for almost six hours through Sao Simao, a town of 12,000 inhabitants located 150 miles northwest of Sao Paulo. "One of the lions was in the middle of the street, another attacked a horse," said local police officer Andre Luis Trevizani. "They caused panic in the town." The safety of circuses in Brazil has become a topic of national debate since five lions mauled to death a 6-year-old boy as he visited the animal cages at a circus in April. |
