Dog kills baby kangaroo at Belfast Zoo

Monday 23rd April 2001

The Alsatian-cross was shot by police after they were alerted by zoo staff.

Mark Challis, assistant zoo manager, said staff heard the dog barking within the grounds of the zoo and located it in the kangaroo paddock, which houses about a dozen of the animals.

The RUC was called in and the dog, which had a baby kangaroo in its mouth, was shot.

"We are presuming the dog got in under the fence rather than over it. We are checking the fences at the moment," Mr Challis told Ananova.

"The last time a dog got into the zoo was about seven years ago. But we did have human intruders in February, who got into the zoo and attacked and killed the penguins."

Mr Challis said he understood the dog had an owner locally, but it was not wearing a collar or any form of identification.
