Elephant
tramples safari tourist to death
Story filed: 15:20 Friday 10th August 2001 A German tourist in Kenya has been trampled to death by an elephant as he tried to take its photograph. The tourist, on an African Safari Club holiday, was walking with his wife and son when the attack happened. Wilfred Njiiri, manager of Tsavo Park Hotel, said the elephant was alone. He added park rules ban unsupervised walks. (continued below)
The attack happened near the Voi River when the family had gone for an unsupervised walk from their campsite. "They must have gone too close for the comfort of the elephant. The elephant attacked the man and killed him instantly," Mr Njiiri said in a letter to tour operators. An official at the Kenya Wildlife Service confirmed the death, but would not release any additional information. The man has not been named. Mr Njiiri has told tour operators the hotel will take extra precautions to avoid a repeat of the death. BACK to Animal Attack Files Index Tell a Friend about the Animal Attack Files |
