Elephants Kill Four Bangladeshis
November 23, 2001 7:01 am EST CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh (Reuters) - Wild elephants have killed four people and injured 15 others while rampaging through two villages in southeastern Bangladesh, forest officials said on Thursday. "A herd of some 15 elephants stormed the villages at Rangunia in Chittagong district early on Wednesday. They pulled down a number of bamboo and straw houses, damaged crops and killed four people," one official told reporters. He said 15 villagers were injured by the elephants, which came from nearby forests that are about 350 kilometers (220 miles) southeast of the capital Dhaka. Wild elephants have killed nearly 30 people in Chittagong and nearby Cox's Bazar districts so far this year, police said.
