Man attacked by aggressive pig

03/08/02

HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP -- A Titusville man suffered serious injury to one of his legs when he was bitten by an aggressive pig yesterday evening, police said.

Thomas L. Short, 51, told authorities he was walking along the Janssen Pharmaceutica property on Route 579 (Trenton-Harbourton Road) about 5:50 p.m. when he encountered the pig, which had wandered onto the Janssen land from a neighboring property, police said.

The pig "became aggressive" and would not let Short pass by, police said.

When Short attempted to go around the pig, the animal attacked him and bit his right calf, causing "extensive damage," police said.

Short was treated at the scene by Union Rescue Squad and then transported to The Medical Center at Princeton for additional care, police said.

Police Officer Mike Cseremsak and Animal Control Officer Belinda Ogitis investigated and learned that the pig had been acting aggressively earlier in the week, police said.

At the request of the animal's owner, Anthony Tassone of Titusville, the pig was destroyed, police said. The pig's carcass will be sent to a state laboratory to be tested for rabies, police said.
