Mushroom pickers save bear attack victimStory filed: 16:22 Monday 5th August 2002 A group of passing mushroom pickers have saved a man who was almost killed by a large bear in Slovakia. The 30-year-old was attacked in a forest near Tatranska Strba. He was airlifted to hospital in critical condition but is recovering. The group had heard his screams and ran to help. The bear fled when it saw the other people approach. The bear attack is the most serious of a series which have happened in Slovakia's Tatra mountains this year. Daily newspaper Novy Cas reports local ecologists say hungry bears have been woken early from hibernation due to record warm weather and a lack of forest food is forcing them to wander closer to villages and towns.
